How to wear over-the-knee boots

A major hit from the fashion runways has finally made its way into high-street collections, so even everyday women can fall in love with it. There’s just one catch — not everyone knows how to wear over-the-knee boots with elegance, without the overall effect resembling Julia Roberts’ profession in Pretty Woman.

Over-the-knee boots remain a hot trend, so don’t be afraid to go for them. If you don’t find them in local brick-and-mortar shops, rely on online stores, where you’ll discover truly beautiful models at attractive prices. With tall boots, however, less is more — forget bold make-up and latex, and opt instead for matte leather or suede.

No Julia

Rule number one is clear — if you wear over-the-knee boots, you need to approach them with sensitivity. You certainly don’t want to be mistaken on the street for a stripper or a high-end escort. That’s why combining tall boots with a deep neckline, a very short skirt, dramatic make-up or a crop top is a definite no-go. All of this together with over-the-knee boots looks cheap and vulgar — and that’s exactly what we want to avoid. Instead, rely on more understated outfits, especially if you wear trendy over-the-knee boots during the day.

With jeans or with shorts

Skinny jeans go perfectly with over-the-knee boots — the tighter, the better. They also work well with shorts, but these should be longer; ultra-short “hot pants” are best avoided. Simply pull on warm tights under woollen, more “respectable” shorts, add a roll-neck top and finish with a blazer. Over-the-knee boots will complement such an outfit beautifully without being provocative. They also look striking with a long wool jumper, jumper dress or a longer belted cardigan.

Sexy diva

Heading to a party or a girls’ night out? You can loosen the reins a little and transform into a sexy diva with the help of tall boots. How? Try interesting monochrome leggings paired with a more daring longer top. As mentioned earlier, skip the plunging neckline and opt instead for one bare shoulder — if any. Figure-hugging leggings and over-the-knee boots with an extra-high heel are sexy enough on their own.

Stylish lady

Sexy boots and dresses? Absolutely! If you combine them in a way that keeps the look elegant and tasteful, there’s nothing to go wrong. Take inspiration from our photo gallery and you’ll see that investing in over-the-knee boots really is worth it.
