High heels as a symbol of sex appeal and attraction
A woman may be beautiful, but without high-heeled shoes she may fail to attract men. According to French psychologists, high heels are linked to greater female attractiveness and often mean more in men’s eyes than physical beauty alone.
The psychologists lined up a group of dark-haired hostesses dressed identically — in dark skirts and white blouses. Although they looked very similar, men perceived clear differences between them, caused solely by the presence of heels. Even the same woman was rated significantly higher in terms of sex appeal and attractiveness when wearing high heels compared to flat shoes.
High stilettos dominate male attention
Women wearing the highest heels (over ten centimetres) were the most successful when asking men for help or to complete a questionnaire — in eighty-three per cent of attempts. Women in flat shoes succeeded in only forty-seven per cent of cases when approaching unfamiliar men.
Heels, however, had no effect on women. Regardless of the footwear worn by the hostesses, the success rate was only thirty-three per cent when they asked other women for help.
Women are more attractive in heels
In another experiment, the hostesses dropped a glove. Men rushed to help in ninety-three per cent of cases when the woman was wearing high heels. When she wore flat shoes, they reacted in only sixty-two per cent of cases.
In the final experiment, conducted in a nightclub where women were seated near the bar and displayed their legs in different types of footwear, psychologist Nicholas Guéguen from the University of South Brittany found that women in high heels were approached within eight minutes, while those in flat shoes were not approached until after thirteen minutes.
