Forget Sneakers: The New Fitness Trend Is High-Heel Workouts
For all lovers of high heels, choreographer Kamilah Barrett has created special exercise routines. During her classes, participants strengthen their bodies, dance in high heels and learn to walk like models. A one-hour Heel Hop training session costs the equivalent of around 300 Czech crowns.
You can really do almost anything in high heels. Hip-hop dancer Kamilah Barrett, who has collaborated with singer R. Kelly and rapper 50 Cent, focuses primarily on strength training in her classes. With the right technique, she claims that walking in heels can relieve foot and back pain, while also making women feel even more feminine.
“We draw inspiration from ballet, muscle strengthening and, above all, understanding balance. Women need to maintain balance between the big toe and the second toe, which is the key support area for body weight. Heels are constructed differently. Every shoe is different in structure and even in weight, so ligaments around the kneecap or the gluteal muscles don’t always know how to maintain balance properly,” the choreographer explained.
According to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association, 42 percent of women wear high heels because they like them, even though they are uncomfortable. Problems caused by heels were reported by 73 percent of women.
